Davido's return to doing what he loves doing best after what can only be described as a tragic moment in his life has to be the most anticipated moment in Afrobeats. Davido is one artiste that has banked himself alot of culture capital amongst his peers and also his fans, so its not surprise that his hiatus was met with a hankering for his return. Davido is back and this time he comes 'bearing gifts' by way of his fourth studio album,Timeless. This album is of its time and I am yet to hear an album in 2023 that is a zeitgeist for the Afrobeats genre like Timeless is.
Every track on the album represents the genre Davido has fully represented. In the midst of a carefully curated album he was artistically able to share his current mindset having been through some of life's challenges. If the reaction of Davido's fans across the globe is anything to go by his return not only symbolises a rise through adversity, it also proves that he is more than just an artiste, he is a movement.
The first 24hours of an album's release is always a sign of things to come. Since the release of 'Timeless' it has become the highest charting album ever by a Nigerian artist on US Apple Music. Some of my personal favourites ( on my first listen I hasten to add) are Over Dem, Godfather, Unavailable,No Competition, LCND, One For The Road.
