“SupaCell” – Written and Directed by RapMan (Review)

So I finally got round to completing the full first season of "SupaCell" on Netflix.

With all the hype and noise surrounding this show, I kid you not, all the rumours you and I have heard are 100% true. This SupaCell is THEE best show Netflix has aired in a very long time. (In my opinion).

I’ve been a Netflix subscriber for years now but I hardly watch it because the shows on there have not been hitting for a while. I’ve been bored with their options and it doesn’t help that they keep on adding old movies and shows.

In June, I started seeing the promotions for SupaCell, but let me be honest with you, I didn’t really pay too much attention to it. It’s been so long since I watched anything on Netflix so when I would see the promos on social media every so often, I thought , “hmmmm… what is this show??”.

Then I came across The Breakfast Club interview with "RapMan" and at that point after watching I said to myself I have to watch it but it must be a day when I’m not working.

Today was that day and let me tell you, the moment I pressed play is the moment I was hooked. Having an understanding before hand and background story and information makes it much easier but if you do not know it, it is still self explanatory as you watch each episode.

Supercell is about a group of young individuals living in South London who suddenly develop superpowers which stems from either having a parent that has full Sickle Cell or being a carrier (Sickle Cell Trait) of the disease. What they also have in common is that they are all black (one is technically mixed race).

People who live with the sickle cell disease produce unusually shaped red blood cells. These red blood cells can cause many problems due to the fact that they do not live as long as the healthy blood cells and can block blood vessels.

The Sickle Cell disease is a serious and lifelong health condition that predominantly effects black people. Although ongoing treatment can help manage many of the symptoms.

Now back to SupaCell….. As the five supacells are living their day to day lives, they try to get their heads around the idea of having newly discovered super powers. Meanwhile one man (played by Tosin Cole) had accidentally went to the future with his powers and met his future self. While in the future it was revealed that someone he loves dearly will die and in order to stop that from happening, he must bring all five supercells together to fight and stop the inevitable.

The cast of this amazing show includes,
Tosin Cole
Nadine Mills
Josh Tedeku
Calvin Demba
Adelayo Adebayo
Yasmin Monet Prince
Eric Kofi-Abrefa
Robbie Gee
Micheal Salami
Justin ‘Ghetts’ Jude Clarke Samuels
Eddie Marsan

There are six episodes in season one, hopefully season two gets more episodes as it’s too good of a show to have only six.
Directer and writer of the hit series, RapMan, makes a cameo along with Adam Deacon.

As a Black British Nigerian woman who grew up in London all my life, this is a huge milestone and history in the making. "Top Boy" kicked the door down and SupaCell took the baton and ran with it. Every single person involved did an amazing job. I am definitely looking forward to season/series two.

Supacell was number 1 for the first two weeks of its release on June 27th 2024. At my time of watching it, it was number 3 and is currently still showing on Netflix. Go check it out now if you haven’t already.
